Your roof is your main line of protection against storms, high winds, and even flying branches. As such, don't you think it deserves great treatment? You can take better care of your roof by keeping your gutters clear, addressing moss issues promptly, and having shingles replaced as soon as they go missing. How to Spot a Leak in Your Commercial Roof

Nothing can be quite as frustrating for a business owner than to show up to the office and realize you have a leak in your roof. Not only does this mean that you have to put some money down to fix it, but it also means that you have to do it quickly before any of your office gets damaged or your employees file a complaint. To make sure that you identify where the leak is and determine how you should fix it, there are a few things that you should do.

Identify Where the Problem Is

How big your commercial building is and what kind of roof you have will determine how you can identify the problem. For instance, if your building is an old house, then you will have to climb up into the attic with a flashlight, dig through the crawl space, and try to spot any water leaks that are coming in. Specific things to look for are areas that are a bit moist, that have wood rot, or have signs of mold.

If, however, you have more of a warehouse style business that has an open ceiling, identifying the leak can be easier since you don't have to sift through a bunch of insulation and other things. If your ceilings are really high, then you should just get on the roof and start looking around there first. Things to look for on your roof include darker spots that indicate moisture and obvious holes.

Fix the Problem

If you have never patched a roof before then it's best to just leave it up to a commercial roofing service to do the job. Depending on how bad the leak is and how big of a hole you have, your roofer may recommend either patching it or replacing your roof entirely. If your roof is over a few decades old or if you live in a part of the country that gets hit with a lot of adverse weather, then it may be time to bite the bullet and just have it replaced.

When you own a business it's your responsibility to provide your employees with a safe and stable work environment. If you have things like water leaking in through your roof, they can file complaints and get you a fine in some instances. Your best bet is to have a leaky roof taken care of right away before it gets worse.
