Repairing Your Home's Shingle Damage

Your home's roof shingles can be critical parts of the structure that can be exposed to extremely challenging conditions. As a result, the shingles on a roof can be some of the components that will simply have to undergo repairs somewhat often. For a homeowner that has a general understanding of the type and variety of damage that their roof shingles can experience, it may be much easier for them to take effective steps to correct this problem.

Hail Impacts

Hail storms cause significant and widespread property damage when they occur. The roofs of homes can be especially vulnerable to this damage due to the large flat surface being able to absorb a tremendous number of impacts from these stones. When hail stones strike asphalt shingles, they can cause damage in a few different ways. One example of this could be completely removing the shingles from the roof. Furthermore, the force of these impacts may actually be able to break and crack the shingles, this could result in them being significantly less effective at protecting the roof of the home.

Pest Damage

Pests are another common source of damage to a roof. Individuals may largely associate these pest issues with termites, but there are also a number of small animals that can cause serious issues for a shingle roof. Squirrels can be prone to removing shingles from the structure, warping them, or causing other problems that could degrade the performance of the shingles. Unfortunately, individuals may not recognize this hazard, which could lead to them failing to protect their roofs from squirrel damage.

Rot Developing On The Shingles

The shingles that are installed on your roof will be capable of withstanding many years of exposure to the elements. However, if the shingles are reaching the end of their designed life span, there may be a risk of them starting to rot. This rot can be accelerated by allowing the roof to remain damp for long periods of time. Leaves and other debris on the roof can be the most common source of this type of damage. Regularly cleaning the roof may limit the risk of the shingles rotting, but if this damage has developed on your home, it is likely that the only effective repair option will be to replace the shingles through either a new roof installation or a re-roofing project. To minimize the chance of rot forming on the shingles again in the near future, the entire surface of the roof will need to be cleaned and sealed at regular intervals.
