If the time has come to replace your sheet metal roof, you may be wondering whether you should stick with the same materials or try something new. There's also an in-between choice that works well for a lot of people: metal shingles. Metal shingles are typically made from the same galvanized steel as metal roofing panels, which means they offer similar protection. However, they also offer some advantages over sheet metal that are worth considering.

Metal shingles are easier to install.

Installing a sheet metal roof is not exactly difficult, but it does require a lot of strength and agility. The panels are heavy, and getting them up on the roof is difficult. The roofers then have to hold them in perfect positions as they attach them to the roof deck. This requires a large team of roofers, and it requires roofers who are strong and really know what they are doing. Metal shingles, by comparison, are easier to install. They are smaller, lighter, and easier to maneuver. A smaller team can install the shingles as they can work at their own pace and won't tire as quickly. Because of this difference, it may be easier to find a company to install metal shingles, and you may have more installers to choose from.

Metal shingles have a softer look.

Sheet metal roofing has a very strong, modern look. You might like this look, but if you do not, there is a good chance you will find metal shingles more attractive. They do often have the shine of metal roofing, but they look more traditional. You can find them with a matte finish, which will make them look even more toned-down and subtle. 

Metal shingles are easier to repair and replace over the years.

If a roof panel becomes damaged, your roofers typically need to replace that entire, large panel. If a metal shingle gets damaged, your roofers only have to replace that one small shingle. This is a simpler repair to make, and it will cost less. If you live in an area where hail and strong winds are common, a metal shingle roof may be easier to manage over the years than one made from sheet metal.

If your sheet metal roof is approaching the end of its lifespan, consider replacing it with a metal shingle roof. Metal shingles are easier to install, easier to work on, and have a more subtle look.
